Match Report: BRFC - CO Sèvres

Date: 15/11/2008 Venue: A Result: 10-15

Reaching Sèvres’ home pitch in the Meudon forest isn’t the easiest thing in the world indeed.

Winning there neither, though we must admit this game’s outcome is definitely the most frustrating we’ve faced in a long time.

Unusually enough, this game started off quite nicely, as we walked on the potato field Sèvres calls a rugby pitch with fierce envy, a few quick runners and a somewhat coherent game-plan. We were the first to score a try, only to see our opponents score one of their own roughly two minutes later. Determination was not to be enough, as we lost focus on a few occasions and a hell-load of line-outs because of a big lock of theirs and a clear lack of brains on yours truly’s part. As importantly, Sèvres proved to be a far more realistic side than us, converting their only three clear try opportunities into actual tries while we approached their line on an incredible number of times – they also proved more aggressive on the rucks, causing some more unfortunate possession losses. We overall ran that ball quite smoothly, the show being pretty well run by our two Little Celts and a back line that seems to be finding its marks. The last 25 minutes of the game actually turned into an Epic, as we tried again and again though unsuccessfully to breach their line. Still, we could definitely have won this, for we showed once more that we are starting to work as a team and behaving as one – as our Captain pointed it out, we are 10% error-margin away from beating anyone; let us work some more at practice to eradicate that 10% and beating the crap out of whoever gets in the way.

Nothing much should be said about Sèvres, as they proved more courteous and less brutal than they have in the past. We should however praise them for the quality of their defence and their obvious mental preparation/cohesion – we may perhaps want to improve on the latter.

On a different note, and having established last week that idiocy is hereditary, we discovered this week yet another Rugby Natural Law already experienced by the great George Gregan with Toulon last season: speaking English on a French pitch can earn you a yellow card and continuous admonishments. A number of you should definitely start working on their French cursing, as “Enculé” does not seem to be nearly as impolite as “Cocksucker”, a word one could however have been tempted to use last Saturday.

Since some guy was throwing a birthday party (he usually poorly throws a ball), we ended up on another sober evening at the Freedom Pub and some Caipirinha fun – nobody got hurt, in the end….

Final Score: CO Sèvres 15 – 10 BRFC (3 tries to 2)

Man of the match: Never say never, it is Eudes LE GARS, who definitely found his vocation as a flanker

Noticeable performances: Catching-eye performances from a bunch of newcomers in the back lines, including Ismael, Guillaume and Yann; Niel on his bleeding nose and an excellent game; Will…but he doesn’t remember ;-)

Special thanks to: All those who either had to stay at home or were injured – Lads, we’re counting on you on the upcoming games. Tom for playing in the front-row – received some compliments from Sèvres Captain (tight-head prop) about our front-row, actually.

Villain of the Match: This time, nobody – Cassoti can’t be playing for everyone, can he?
